SPOTLIGHT: Burlesque Boston

Today in the Spotlight we are presenting Burlesque Boston, your one-stop-shop for all things burlesque in Boston! Because burlesque often happens at multiple venues, sometimes scattered throughout the week and sometimes all happening on the same weekend, Burlesque Boston - currently headed by our friend Ruby Lovely - works to make a calendar of ALL the local burlesque events! Which is helpful because how else are we going to keep track of everything?! Burlesque Boston has a website and an Instagram account that blast local shows and track them all in calendar form. Boston, Massachusetts has a thriving burlesque and drag scene made up of a diverse group of performance artists. There are troupes, solo performers, and everything in between. Boston Burlesque is full of creativity, talent, exciting shows, thought provoking performances, and so much more!

Read on to learn everything you need to know about Burlesque Boston.

Burlesque Boston’s Important Mission

Burlesque Boston (BB) was created for performers, by performers (a mission Rhody Q can really get behind). The focus at BB is to make sure performers have consistent access to information on safe and performer-positive spaces. In a world where just about anyone can buy a website domain and boost their pages, BB is a place that provides all the info on the shows and classes that provide positive experiences for everyone.

Per the website's page:

“Burlesque Boston was created by a group of local performers and producers as a way to foster community among local artists. We hope to provide a visible platform and center of information that celebrates and supports each other's art”.

As artists it is important to have a trusting place to share, collaborate, and support each other, and Burlesque Boston is a great place to start for any performer or supporter in the Boston, and even the Greater Boston area- reaching to North Shore MA, Southern MA, and even Providence, RI!

Burlesque Boston Vales

To maintain BB as a consistently safe place for performers, producers, and supporters alike, it follows these values. You can find these values transparently posted on the website as well.

  • Supporting and encouraging burlesque and drag artists in the greater Boston area

  • Promoting community and a culture of inclusion and empowerment

  • Promoting and showcasing the art of performers of all genders, races, nationalities, backgrounds, religions, bodies, sexual orientation, abilities/disabilities

  • Fostering a safe and accountable community

  • Creating a safe space for performers to communicate with one another in a non-competitive environment

  • Creating a central location for information/resources/promotion for the local burlesque community and its supporters

  • Building a foundation of respect, honesty, accountability, and transparency

As you can see, Burlesque Boston is doing the hard work to keep communities supportive, accountable, and running smoothly!

How to Follow Burlesque Boston

You can follow Burlesque Boston on Instagram here. The Instagram account is a great resource of current shows, as upcoming shows are often posted on the feed as well as shared from producers and performers on the stories. You can also learn more about BB on the website that started it all: burlesqueboston.com. Here there are pages for troupes, resources, and of course a calendar of upcoming events that can be easily added to your own calendar so you don’t miss a show!

Without Burlesque Boston, we would be on our own to find every show across Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and I don’t know about you but I can’t keep up with that! So thank you Ruby Lovely, and everyone who has contributed to creating, maintaining, or sharing the page. Make sure you follow them so you don’t miss out!
